The city gained prominence due to the Vellore Mutiny, which took place inside the iconic Vellore Fort in 1806 and is regarded as one of the first instances of organized rebellion in India’s freedom struggle. This rich historical legacy continues to define Vellore’s identity and importance in Indian history.
The city is also a major center for education and healthcare, housing the renowned Christian Medical College & Hospital, a 125-year-old institution and one of India’s largest and most advanced hospitals. Additionally, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) and several other institutions contribute to making Vellore a prominent educational hub. With people arriving from across India and abroad, the city reflects a diverse and vibrant cultural mix.
